The European Parliament confirmed the new European Commission under Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday by a broad majority. This will allow the new leadership of the European Union to take office on Sunday. Von der Leyen is the first woman to become president of the powerful European authority.
For Von der Leyen, this day is both the culmination of her political career and the successful conclusion of a lengthy procedure. Three of its original nominations were rejected by the European Parliament. Sylvie Goulard from France, Romanian Rovana Plumb and Hungarian László Trócsányi were knocked out at the hearings.
