Trumpeter, bandleader, innovator. Elegant, intellectual, ingenious and always controversial. A man who stands for a sound, so wonderful that he can break your heart. MILES DAVIS – BIRTH OF THE COOL tells of the life and career of a musical exceptional and a cultural icon. A true visionary that does not fit into any scheme, with an absolutely embodied: coolness.
The central motto of Miles Davis' life was the constant determination to go beyond borders and live according to their own rules. This made him a star and at the same time difficult to handle in private, especially for the people closest to him. Time and again Davis broke with conventions, in music and in life – and as soon as he thought he was going mainstream himself, he started to break new ground. His bold rejection of traditions, his clear vision and his insatiable hunger for new experiences made him an inspirational partner of his musical companions and the cultural icon of generations of music lovers. From bebop to cool jazz, modern quintets, orchestral music, jazz fusion, rock'n'roll and last but not least hip-hop – Miles Davis made music beyond all limits.
Director Stanley Nelson ("The Black Panthers: The Vanguard of the Revolution", Emmy® Award winner for "Freedom Riders"), one of the leading chroniclers of Afro-American history, created a documentary with MILES DAVIS – BIRTH OF THE COOL Bring the audience close to the sound and personality of one of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century – thanks to previously unpublished archive footage, studio outtakes and rare photographic material.
