It was an innovation at the MTV Europe Music Awards ceremony: for the first time, a prize was awarded in the "Rock Icon" category – and went to former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher. He accepted the trophy by saying, "I want to thank MTV for recognizing my brilliance."
Other big winners of the evening include Taylor Swift, newcomer Billie Eilish and the South Korean band BTS. They all won two prizes each. Swift won Best American Act and was also voted Best Video. Eilish has presented the best song in the judges' opinion and is the best newcomer. And the K-pop band BTS was ahead in the categories "Most Fans" and "Best Live Show".
The big loser at this year's awards ceremony was Ariana Grande. She had been nominated a total of seven times – and ended up empty-handed. In the category of "Best Artist" she had to let the – six times nominated – Canadian pop singer Shawn Mendes the precedence. As "Best Song", "Bad Guy" was awarded by Eilish (a list of all nominees and winners can be found here).
