Spain won the Davis Cup for the sixth time. Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal and his team won the final in Madrid against Canada ahead of Roberto Bautista Agut and Nadal. Most recently, the Spanish team won the 2011 Davis Cup.
After Roberto Bautista Agut beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 7: 6 (7: 3), 6: 3 in the late afternoon, Nadal also won the duel in two sets against Denis Shapovalov before the doubles. 6: 3, 7: 6 (9 : 7).
After a clear first set, the 20-year-old Shapovalov was stable in the second round against the 33-year-old Nadal, especially at his own serve in front of the loud Spanish audience. In the long ball changes but mostly Nadal won the point.
In the tiebreak, Shapovalov led outsiders 2: 0, but by mistake he brought Nadal back into the game. Two match balls could defend the young Canadian still, but because he also forgave himself, Nadal got another chance. After 1:55 hours, the 19-time Grand Slam winner turned his third match point.
Spain had prevailed in the semi-final against Great Britain, which had previously won in the quarter-final against Germany. The DTB team must continue to wait for the first time in the Davis Cup for twelve years.
