According to the Belgian police, it is "one of the largest cases of child sexual abuse" in history. Now a court is passing judgment on four men.
In Belgium, four men were sentenced to several years in prison in a widespread child pornography scandal. They were sentenced to prison terms of five to 16 years, as is now known. The court ordered a psychological report for a fifth accused. According to the Belgian police, it is "one of the largest cases of child sexual abuse" in history. According to the European police agency Europol, 90 suspects were identified worldwide and 110 underage victims were identified.Worldwide networkThe investigation got underway in 2015 when a police officer noticed a man on a beach in Blankenberge, Belgium, who photographed children in swimming suits. Around nine million child pornography photos were found on the suspect's computer, who was among those convicted on Tuesday. Two other Belgians and one man from the Netherlands and one from the UK were on the dock, and with the help of Europol, investigators had managed to unmask a child pornography network spanning 44 countries in recent years. The perpetrators distributed photos and videos that showed the abuse of babies and adolescents. The youngest victims were a few months old, and the investigation is ongoing. Many of the 90 suspects have not yet been caught. However, some of them have already been tried in their home countries. A defendant in Australia was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
